Leadership studies have evolved over the last 100 years from focuses on the internal dispositions associated with effective leaders to broader inquires that in emphases on the cognition, attributes, behaviors and contexts in which leaders and followers are dynamically embedded and interact over time (Avolio, 2007)

Double Loop Learning is insight a person has of their own responsibility for behaviors outcomes, and is a higher level thinking skill. Double Loop Learning includes self-talk (a form of psychology). Self-talk allows us to affirm ourselves, examine our personal behavior, the behavior of others, and facilitates self learning.

Bloom’s Taxonomy lists thinking skills, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation are the three “Higher Order Thinking Skills”. Being aware of thinking about personal motives, needs and the impact of choices, etc., are considered apart of the thinking process.

Double Loop Learning is important to leadership and organizational effectiveness because it is an internal mental process and once an individual learns this thinking it can become automatic.

In conclusion, leadership studies have evolved, Double Loop Learning is insight that includes Bloom’s Higher Order Thinking Skills.
